The central government is going to implement a new law from July 20. The biggest benefit is going to be to consumers after this new law comes into force. Considering the government's claim, consumers will not need any new legislation for the next 50 years. In fact, the new Consumer Protection Act 2019 will come into force across the country from July 20. The central government has also issued a notification to this effect and the new law will replace the nearly 35-year-old Consumer Protection Act-1986.

Misleading advertisements related to a product will be costly after the new law comes into force as the new law provides for action on misleading advertisements.

Consumer disputes will be resolved in a timely, effective and expeditious manner once the new law comes into force. Under the new law, a central consumer protection authority (CCPA) has been created along with consumer courts. This authority will strictly monitor the protection of the interests of the customers. At the same time, he will have the right to be fined and sentenced.

Under the new law, a consumer can file a case in any commuter court in the country even if he has purchased goods from anywhere. In the same way the Consumer Dispute Resolution Commission will hear the plight of consumers. For example, if a shopkeeper overcharges you, misbehaves with you, or sells defective goods and services, every such case will be heard.

Under the new law, a PIL or public interest application can now be filed only in the Consumer Forum. Online and teleshopping companies are also included. A mediation cell has also been set up for mediation between customers and shopkeepers. This cell can only mediate after the consent of both parties.

The Consumer Protection Act-2019 was supposed to come into force in January this year but its date was extended till March. The date was once again extended after a nationwide lockdown, but now a notification has been issued that a new consumer protection law will apply across the country from July 20.
